【weavers】
I have very little interest in Japanese music or animation (ps: until I met “Attack on Titan” and “Demon Slayer” years later😝), but the fact that this film now became an awards-winning blockbuster finally propelled me to go to a theatre.
The story takes place in two different locations in Japan where a boy in Tokyo and a girl in a countryside experience an unexpected body-swapping fantasy.
The plot is almost unbearably boring until you get to see the whole picture… It is a space-time sci-fi/teenage romance; a few highschool kids struggle across time and space to avoid a catastrophe caused by a commet. "Strings" or traditional braids are used symbolically to imply "weaving" of the present and the past, the reality and the dream, the alive and the dead, the immortal and the mortal...
The cinematography is astoundingly beautiful, it takes you to a short trip around Tokyo. The depiction of Japanese shrine traditions somewhat resembles that of Ghibli. The plot is nevertheless very stale and a little confusing for the countless "body exchanges."
If you are really into Japanese animation, it may be worth watching, otherwise don't go waste your time.
